Maybe I Shouldn't Wear That...

Have you ever come to a moment that completely changed the way that you looked at your closet or the clothing choices that you make?

A few months after Jake and I got married, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about the trending fashions of that summer. While we were talking, her husband walked up and listened to us complain about the short-short trend.

He commented on a mutual friend of ours and how he was a little uncomfortable having a casual conversation with her because of her choice to wear clothing that was a little more revealing. Whenever he did talk to her he was constantly aware of where his eyes were, how he was standing and how close he was to her.
It caught me off guard!

As a newlywed, this wasn't something I had ever thought of.
Was it possible that my personal clothing choices made other people uncomfortable?!

After that, I looked at my wardrobe with different eyes. I realized that the things that I had worn in high school and college, in my opinion, were not appropriate to wear, as a happily married woman. Since then, I have been slowly, but surly, weeding out the items of clothing that I associate with the 'single mentality'.
I'll spare your eyeballs from the slideshow of pictures from 'Erin's Clothing Choices, Before Marriage'

My rules;
Cleavage covering cami's under all v-neck or button ups.
Shorts must be below the 'cheek line', even when bent over.
Skirts; fingertip length or longer.
White/light shirts require a nude bra.
 Spaghetti straps or strapless anything need a cover, unless it's over 85* or completely unbearable.
No string bikini bottoms ever again.

These, along with other little rules that I have for myself, are a standard that I hold myself to out of respect for myself, my husband and our relationship. I make the choices that I do with my clothing because I never want anyone to be able to make a snap decision about me, my marriage, or how high I hold my husband's opinion based on my clothing choices.
I try really hard to not judge other women on their clothing, unless it's absolutely atrocious (I am human, after all, and have my flaws). What they wear is their prerogative.

I'm not naive.
Everyone judges others.
Maybe it's not clothing, but books topics that you read, music, your blog posts, or *gasp* politics. I know that it happens, and no matter how hard I try, I can't stop myself from caring about what other people think of me.
However, I do have control over the image I choose to present to others.

To protest short-shorts,  I made my own shorts...
And no, I didn't realize that Old Navy had shorts of an appropriate length.
Post to come.

The Cable Cord Cutting Trend

Ever since cutting the cord back in December, every time an article about cable companies or the 'cord cutting trend' comes up, I'm drawn to read it. Cutting our cable cord has been the single best thing that has happened for my personal habits and my relationship. When we owned cable I was constantly watching TV. I would DVR shows that I had absolutely no reason to be watching. Trash TV consumed my free time. Bad shows clogged up my DVR. Jake recorded movies that we already owned.
It was bad.

When we cancelled our cable and got our Roku, things changed.
We stopped using TV as a time waster and started enjoying our life at home together.
We would sort through the Netflix account and find movies that both of us enjoyed watching.
No more Erin monopolizing the TV with lame shows and Jake retreating to the basement to play video games.

We also have been saving about $80 on average, per month.
That's cutting cable and upgrading out internet subscription.

It's truly been a life changer.
I am confident in telling you that we will never own cable again.
There is no need.
We getting our movies from Netflix, our must see shows from Hulu and our HD antenna.

The other perk for 'cord cutting' is not having to sit through all of the commercials. I never knew how terrible commercials were until I wasn't watching them every 10 minutes, for 5 minutes at a time. The subliminal messaging and social pressure that comes from each and every commercial is so blatant it's almost comical.

Cable has come to be seen as the necessity of this generation and anyone without it use to be portrayed as 'less than.'
I'm overjoyed that 'cord cutting' is catching on and that opinion is changing!
 Personally, I feel that I am better able to cut the unnecessary from my life, and I don't think that change would have happened without cutting cable.

Invisalign Update: Tray 28

When I first started my teeth straightening process with Invisalign I thought that it would be an exciting and revealing process.
It was in the beginning.
Now it's just a plugging along type of thing.

I'm very excited to tell you that I am 2 orthodontic appointments away from being tray free!

I'm currently wearing tray number 28.
My next appointment is on Aug 8th.
Then I'm just finishing my trays out and I'll be done.

I'm really excited.

Excited enough to do an update picture.
Here is the before.

Check out the difference in less than a year!
{Attractive, I know. But the bottom crowding is visibly better!}
{So close to being done!! Happy girl!}

So yeah. I'm pretty pleased. It's come really far and I know that there is to go.
I just hope the last appointment is just to fit trays, not to shave my teeth again.
Let me tell you, I HATE having to get my teeth filed.
I almost don't care that it's just a little on the sides to make room for the teeth to move.
I can calmly get through all kinds of dental work, but that.
It's the one thing that puts my teeth on edge, no pun intended.

Another thing that has come from having to be obsessive about my teeth, I'm now acutely aware of other people's teeth.
I'm constantly looking and trying to see if someone I'm talking to has Invisalign.
This habit also makes me look at everyone's teeth. Even the people whose mouths you really, really shouldn't stare at...
Sometimes it induces nightmares.

More nightmares than the first picture in this post.
My apologies.

Les Miserables Update: The Beginning

I love the summer musicals.
I get to be out and about with people I enjoy spending time with.
I get to sing, really sing, every night.... Well, on the nights that they don't get to my part, I just sing with everyone else. I'm probably really annoying, but I enjoy it.

Here are some pictures from the beginning of rehearsals!
{The first night of 'leads' rehearsal. Me and the guy playing Thenardier. He cracks me up!}
{Singing 'On My Own' for the first time in rehearsal. It didn't go quite how I imagined, but it was exciting!}
{Blocking 'Little Fall of Rain'. Nothing like a little awkward dying love scene with a guy 6 years younger ...}
{I 'die' like a pro...}
{Vocal rehearsal for the students and Eponine... I guess I sing about this guy named Marius...}
{My 'death scene' being acted out in vocal rehearsal. We really are pros.}
{Blocking the robbery scene. Val Jean had better watch out. The Thenardiers are a family f cons.}
{'Heart Full of Love' and me looking sad.}
{Me screaming to warn Maruis..... Or am I just acting?.............}

I've Come to Realize...

- Hollywood gossip sometimes can carry a real life discussion. They are people too, dangit!

- My summer is going to be eaten alive by Les Mis and I only care a little bit.

- I can't sing and laugh at the same time... And laughing in the middle of a solo doesn't make a good impression on people that are probably wishing for me to fall off the stage so they can hijack my part...

- Crop tops are back and there is nothing I can do about it, except quietly judge and compare the look to "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure'.

-High waisted anything just doesn't look right on me, no matter how hard I try.

- Jake is right, empire waists make everyone, even bean poles, look pregnant.

- In 2 years, I'll be going to my 10 year reunion. WTH?!

- I'm, in fact, not 22 anymore. And I haven't been for 4 years. Shocker, right there...

- Blogging, while fun, is hard work.

- This time next year, hopefully, Jake will be gearing up for the MCAT and getting ready to apply to med schools.

- People are sometimes unintentionally thankless or rude. It has nothing to do with an agenda or me, personally.

- I need to focus on the people in my life that want to be a part of my life. I can't make anyone want to be a part of my life, no matter how much I want them to be.

- I'm truly content, happy even, where I am right at this moment.

2013 Tony Awards Red Carpet

Dear People.com, Why is the Tony's red carpet not included in your 'Red Carpet' list?

If you watched, you got to see one of my favorite award shows EVER.

The Classics
{Bernedette is amazing.}
{This dress is VERY similar to a bridesmaid dress that I have...}
{I am loving the white/silver sequins. And that metal belt!}

The Daring
{Interesting sheer shape choice... The 'V' in  the front isn't my favorite, but the pastels are pretty.}
{What up! White AND a bow tie?!}
{Why is she so gorgeous?! the cut and color is right... But the wave in the front is a little awkward.}
{Lace pant-suit. I actually don't mind it. It's by no means my favorite... But it's OK}
{Mad props. The woman is in her 80's. The color is beautiful... But those ruffles!.... Yikes}

The Fabulous
{Lovely, lovely. My favorite of the night! Classic silhouette with a bold print. It was really romantic and beautiful!}
{The drama of this dress can't be contained. I adore the peek of  color from the dress's lining. Really well done!}
Did you not love Cicely Tyson 's acceptance speech?! She was so beautifully spoken!
The TV flops number was really funny! I LOVE Megan Hilty.
Courtney B Vance's acceptance seppch made me and Tom Hanks tear up.
The highlight of my night had to be when one of my old friends from high school was shown, twice, in a montage of the Broadway season, in review.

Update: DIY Laundry Detergent

My DIY Laundry Detergent's mortal enemy?

Jake didn't tell me that bar soap made his eczema worse.
After about 2 weeks and 6-7 loads of laundry done and put away, I had to toss my mixture.
My husband sometimes looks like he has leopard spots on his sides, legs and under arms.

Standing in the detergent isle at the store, staring at the price of a box of detergent, I decided to do more research before buying anything.

Jake's eczema is fairly mild.
We aren't sure if it's a food reaction or something external.
My guess is external, with his reaction to the ivory in my home made detergent.
Usually, he gets prescription ointments (that he barely ever uses) to help.
He has a personal vendetta against lotion.
As in he only agrees to it if I'm the one putting it on.
I love Jake, but I tell him no.

Going through many articles, aimed at babies, not grown ups, I have decided that Jake will be going to the Dr to get an allergy test done.
Until then All Free and Clear is what we are using.

To say I'm sad is an understatement.
I was really excited at the idea of beating the system.
I'll figure it out, eventually.

Growing Up

Some people look exactly the same as a child as they do as adults.

My brother and sister are in that category...

I don't feel that I'm one of those people.

But, maybe.....

I'm in Love With Mint.com

I'm not doing this review for any compensation at all.
This is just me, sharing something that I have come to find immensely awesome and helpful in my every day life.

Mint.com is amazing.
I'm talking, soothes the little OCD in me.

It is a webpage that loads and categorizes all of your spending!

It's like Quicken, but online.
And free.

You load your banking and loan info into the program and ta-da!
Retailer pie charts.
Spending by category.
Net income graphs.
Savings goals.
Budget keepers.

It's everything amazing and more.

Am I the only one more than half way in love with this site?!

Nieces and Nephews!

I'm over-the-moon excited to tell you that Jake's sister is expecting!
That's right, it's looking like it is baby season in my family again.

This little love will be my 6th niece/nephew.
And guess what...

It's a GIRL!

SIL and Math are going to be bringing a little girl home November of this year!
And Noah gets to be a protective big brother!

We have known for a while, due to some scary issues, But everything is looking good and she is a healthy not-so-little thing. I guess she already has some meat on her bones.

Aaaaah! I can't wait to meet her!
I'm growing to love children more and more...
Especially when I can lay some claim to them.

Congrats SIL and Math!

The 'C' word

It's hard to share with people about what strongholds you're fighting against.
The main reason it is hard is that you are afraid of judgement or having your issues swept aside.

I am not as knowledgeable about cancer as many others. It's never really touched my life until the last 2 years, or so.
It started out with a close friend being diagnosed with small cell lung cancer-
a more aggressive type of lung cancer that is not curable.  It does respond better to chemo than the other type, non small cell lung cancer.
Watching him go through the troubles and emotional battle that chemo entails has been heart breaking.
Things are going well for him with a macrobiotic diet, which is very interesting  and new to me.
I ask questions about it all the time.

Very recently, Jake's step-dad was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after a mass was removed from his throat. He aspirated while he was at the hospital and has to wait to recover until the doctors go in to take out the second side.
Once that is done he will be taking radioactive iodine rather than doing chemo.

I don't really know how to process cancer.
I'm appalled by how common it is becoming.
Like I said, I'm no expert, but I agree with others who say that it's something that has changed in recent times that is causing this cancer epidemic.
I may be wrong to state that so generally, but cancer should never be considered 'common place'.
No disease should ever be common place.
We live in the 21st century!

Anyway, I just wanted to share my heavy heart.
I knew that this post wouldn't be a very well written or expressed one, and for that I apologize.

Take care, Loves.
